Peter Molyneux Leaving Lionhead Studios

We’re sure at some point you might have heard of Peter Molyneux and his work. He is the bright mind that brought you stellar franchises like Black & White, Fable, and even good old Populous. He’ll be leaving Lionhead& Microsoft Europe division for independent work. More after the break.

Kotaku wrote a good article which sums up his creative roles in the past and present. Fable for Kinect is still in line for release and he will still be involved until it is done.

Via Kotaku:

Molyneux is exiting both his position as the leader of Lionhead and his role as the creative head of Microsoft Studios Europe, which primarily consisted of overseeing Lionhead and Rare. Lionhead will be run by studio co-founder Mark Webley. Microsoft is not immediately naming a new head of the European studios.

Molyneux will move on to an as-yet unpublicized independent venture, one that ends his tenure at Lionhead. That studio is responsible, under Molyneux, for more than a decade’s worth of ambitious games.

“I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created,” Molyneux said, “from Black & White toFable to our pioneering work with Milo and Katefor the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture. I’d like to thank the team at Lionhead, as well as our partners at Microsoft Studios for their support, dedication and incredible work over the years.”

A7san. Im glad he did, i felt he was forced into some rules with MS and must make Fable. Fable 1 was awesome because it was fresh and unique when MS i’m sure forced him to make more Fable titles, this is when i started to notice the IP going stale and average with each new part.

I am expecting great things now he is free from rules and can do what he sets out to do without control, i am sure he will return to his great roots ala Syndicate, Black and white 1 – 2, Populos, Dungeon Keeper, Hi-Octane.etc

If you notice when Rare got bought by MS, they killed them too, lol. Hopefully Rare would return to their great roots too but that’s unlikely, now they are stuck making crappy kinect games instead of Banjo Kazooie and Conker.

    1. Totally agree with you. I have respect for this man and have enjoyed a lot of his games and your words about the Fable franchise are pretty accurate. Guess it’s all for the best to him.
