Second Thoughts: Metal Gear and Japanese Games Industry

Here is another post by our Guest writer “The Hamda

After finding out that Kojima will no longer be responsible for the story and the cutscenes of MGR, I’m not as excited for it anymore! I was ok with Platinum Games taking over the gameplay, I was ok with the game being a hack n slack game; it is a new series after all, but the fact that Kojima will be working on other projects and won’t work on MGR, it makes me sad! Now that I think about it, Raiden sounds like a total douche in the trailer, everything he says is out of character, including the “LET’S HAVE SOME FUN” part. Most MGS fans agree with me, in fact, some one them are even more disappointed than me.

It got me thinking, why are Japanese developers relying on western developers now? Don’t get m wrong, I love western games, we all do; but Japanese games have a special taste I don’t want to lose, not yet anyway! Devil May Cry is taken over by Ninja theory, Resident Evil is taken over by Slant Six, Dead Rising is taken over by Blue Castle games, and now Kojima is following on Capcom’s steps! I know he has more projects to finish, but I’d rather wait more for MGR to have a Kojima Productions game, than have an early MGR game that’s fully made by platinum games.

I already gave up on Resident Evil after Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon city , I played the demo in Games11, and it felt like Left 4 Dead, it’s a fun game, but it’s not a Resident Evil game. Resident Evil was never the same after RE4 anyway.

إذا اليابانيين ما ظبطوا حالهم فالتطوير كله بيصير عند الأمريكان

I actually really loved Castlevania, while the 2D will always be the shit especially my all time favourite Symphony Of The Night. The LOS was actually great maybe even the best out of the 3D ones. Awesome soundtracks, great bosses, varied environments, good atmosphere and a pretty kickass “holy shit” ending. It also sold alot which means it succeded and they said they are working on a sequel which judging by the ending is going to be really exciting to see where they will be going with this. However for me the superior and of course best Castlevania for me will always be SOTN and im sure many if not all of the Castlevania fans will agree with me.

Now on the topic at hand i’ll post my reply which was on the blog.

” For me, MGS Rising was always a spin off except for the story which is what i was most excited about since it bridges the gap between MGS2 and MGS4 but after watching Kojima talk about the hardships and answering other questions i understood that it was hard on his team and him to balance stealth and action, remember, the mechanic cutting everything looks good on paper but when implementing it im sure was hard and confusing for the team especially since Kojima Pro never developed such a type of game.

I loved that he gave the game to Platinum games and it was a smart move since they are in that league of atmopshere of fast paced slice and dice action oriented games. Even they both commented on how the japanese industry became so shitty this generation compared to the previous generations.

However, since now Kojima said he had to change everything (engine, story.etc) to suit what Platinum games felt comfortable with and needed for their ideas i became less excited for the game because of now the story is after MGS4 and it became a 100% spin off, i was looking forward to the story but now im just looking forward to a hack and slash game based in the MGS universe which is very interesting since swords, Ninja’s, honor and all of the samurai related stuff was already in the universe since it started so it is going to be very interesting to see it tackling this aspect of the universe and for us to experience it.

I know for me im a big MGS fan and im looking forward to it, but as a spin off and nothing more, nothing less. It will be an interesting experiment and i think it will give Ninja gaiden 3 & DMC a run for their money next year.

As for crapcom, well, no comment on them :P while i enjoyed the new RE, MVC3 (will not buy UMVC3 rip off and i feel sorry for those who did) Still, with what they are doing, lol, no one can argue with how much epic fail and bad word of mouth they are causing. Almost everyone agrees capcom is the worst this gen with the first being activision specifically bobby bobby kotick.”
