Ok.. For starters akeeda wa’6i7 shloon el video wl graphics improvement 3n gbol mala da3e a3aliq 3ala hl shay, evwn for the sound too… Bs elly b3aliq 3leeh oho the way they think to make games nowadays ‘3eer, they r trying to attract more audience by trying to make the stories as good as movie hits, even better.. Before their age grp is restricted , now they make games for 5 years old gamers and 18+… multiplayer wasnt an option before compared to the games now.. And most importantly is that from the way they make games before it is like games are treated as childrens toys, Now they treat videogames as a Hobby, not a wasting time thing, ppl even profit from playing games if they want (pro gamers)
Thats my opinion sorry i couldnt make it shorter
And i’m the 1st who commented here so BANZAAAaaaaaAaaaaAAAiiiiiI :D
I’m sure you’ve all seen this picture before, but I think it’s more than relevant now. http://i.imgur.com/BITmX.jpg
So, to answer your questions, yes. Game design definitely has changed over the years. In the most part for the worst, but there are still a lot of good cases.
I’ve become very bored with most recent games since I feel they all follow the same design formula that made a previous game successful. I see this happen especially with FPS shooters nowadays (Call of Duty, Homefront, Battlefield, Medal Of Honor, Crysis..it goes on). Everything is a copy of a copy. It’s very, very rare to see a game developer try something new and fresh. But I guess they’re afraid of taking risks and potentially losing a lot financially.
But I still have hope after seeing some amazing and refreshing titles emerge in the past few years. Games like Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption, Batman Arkham Asylum and Little Big Planet restore my faith in a bright future for gaming where new ideas and concepts aren’t gone forever.
I think game design changed because the cost to produce games is going up all the time and people expect high quality, so there’s very little chance to experiment and try new things. The obvious proof is franchises like Mario, Sonic, Call of Duty, Halo, Metal Gear, Zelda, etc… These games continue to be remade because companies know that people enjoy them, so they will probably buy them again if they changed it a little bit.
Even when relatively new titles come out, such as Devil May Cry or God of War, they are based on the same formula as other games: walk, shoot/slash, collect, move on to the next part. Developers are also relying on ready-made 3D engines such as Crytec, Unreal, and so on to cut costs and reduce development time.
If a company has large development teams, (like EA, Valve, etc..) there’s no problem, but if it has a small development team, it might prefer to create and iPhone/iPod/iPad game and sell it for $4.99 and make more money at less risk. Angry Birds made millions of dollars over a short time and with few developers, but if it was released on the PS3 people will say “that game is garbage” because it’s a different audience and different expectation from consoles.
here is a small formula:
Old games:
Graphics: 3/10
Sounds: 8/10
Creativity 9/10
Fun 7/10
Replay Value: 8/10
New games:
Graphics 9/10
Sounds 6/10
Creativity 2/10 (Ouch)
Fun 4/10
Replay Value 2/10
Why replay value is low?
you almost never play the game again because it’s fun. it’s almost always to unlock new stuff! tekfa how many times you played the same old mario game?
New games IMO focus on pulling the consumer to “try” the game which will make him buys it. after a short while you get bored of the game because the “WOW” feeling diminished and nothing else left.
Good example is:
God of War VS Sonic the hedgehog
How many times you played each?
Awesome feedback guys :D am impressed
I agree with all who commented above me. Before, we didn’t know what to expect from a game, everything was different. But today, the moment we hear that the game’s genre is FPS we know EXACTLY how it’s gonna be like and how it’d feel. This change has been noticed during the 7th generation when online gaming became popular, easy and accessible to everyone. But during 6th and 5th gen, there was more third person action/adventure games with immersing stories than online FPS’s.
I’m not complaining though, the graphics, sounds, presentation of today’s games are beautiful <3 and games we used to play on old TV's are now playable on our phones :D
I’ll put it in a simple way. Today’s game design leans toward the straight forward approach to achieving the goal of the game and easy usage. This is why you don’t see any more complicated J-RPGs games. Same goes for western RPGs as well.
(all comments above say everything i thought about it ).the new games has lost the Simplicity and creativity of the old games , in the old games we dont have cut scene and sound acting but we have non boring gameplay and desire of plyaing again and again and again like if its new game every time you play it . most of the compianes now are trying to have money in short ways and this what we saw in FPS games (call of duty ,battlefiled and , halo etc…..) foucsing on online with some features every year ,some compaines have come up with games make u say WOW like portal and uncharted .
