Gabe Newell announced that DOTA 2 (Defense of The Ancients 2) will be free to play, but won’t go by the standard free to play model. It’ll be a little different than what you are used to. He also talks about possible community driven rewards. More after the break.
Via Side Mission:
Speaking with the folks at Seven Day Cooldown, Newell addressed Valve’s plans to monetize its in-house semi-sequel to the popular Defense of the Ancients mod.
“It’s going to be free-to-play,” Newell said, after struggling to find a description that wasn’t “obscure.” “It’ll have some twists, but that’s the easiest way for people to think about it.”
More on community:
“The issue that we’re struggling with quite a bit is something I’ve sort of talked about before, which is ‘How do you properly value people’s contributions to a community?’” Newell explained. “We’re trying to figure out ways so that people who are more valuable to everybody else, that that’s recognized and accommodated. We all know people where if they’re playing we want to play, and there are other people where if they’re playing we would, like, [rather] be on the other side of the planet.”
“It’s just a question of coming up with mechanisms that recognize and reward people who are doing things that are valuable to other groups of people.”
Rewards and more:
Newell says that Valve will be looking to reward players who serve as “useful guides” and tutors in games like Dota 2. The game maker will also look at “how people can create value or a service in one game and benefit somebody in a different game, you can start to see how the different games sort knit together.”
The game is scheduled for release on both PC and Mac.
